A favorite of local residents, Silver Strand Oxnard grants its buyers a secluded coastal hideaway, filled with vibrant homes that surround its sandy shores and provide a tranquil escape to all. This attractive area maintains its serene ambiance, due to its sole entry and exit point on Victoria Avenue, and hence remains peaceful even in the summer seasons. Silver Strand real estate is a mix of mid century single family homes, with some multi-family dwellings, and some new more modern developments interspersed. Positioned at the most southern end of the dreamy Oxnard beach stretch, and situated amidst the harbor entrances to both Channel Islands and Port Hueneme, it offers all of the benefits of a county beach in limited parking, restrooms and lifeguards, without the crowds and bustle.
Sister to Hollywood Beach, the shores of this beach were sculpted from the dunes that brought Hollywood producers to the area in the early 1920’s. This locale fit perfectly into cinematic roles as the Saharan desert landscape in the 1918 silent film “Bound in Morrocco” and the 1921 adventure/romance film “The Sheik”. Once its scenery and whereabouts were discovered, it became an attractive site to developers, with its idyllic landscape and unique geography. This community started in 1924, when it was subdivided from Hollywood Beach and later formed into lots for homes by developer Fred J. Cutting. Further growth commenced in the 1960’s with the development of Port Hueneme in 1956, and later, the Channel Islands as well.
This waterfront gem is a playground for kayaking and fishing, but is especially revered amongst local surfers as a beloved surf spot, with the waves making their best appearance summer-winter. It is so revered, in fact, that the local Silver Strand surfers were featured in the 2001 surf documentary “The Swell Life”. During the summer months, its smaller swells make it a great location for beginning surfers and boogie boarders. The walls of Port Hueneme are adorned with murals by varied artists, setting a colorful impromptu art walk and a vibrant experience even for those who are less inclined to action and adventure. It even offers a little open air history experience, at the shipwreck site of Le Jenelle, which came to its end at the port in 1970. Visitors can still view the rusted steel remains in their final resting place against the coastline. In the commercial areas you can find restaurants, taverns, and even the occasional antique store or spa, making this location a refreshing and eclectic mix with universal appeal.
